Every New GTA 6 Detail Confirmed After the Extended Look - Full Breakdown
The Extended Look showed us 26 minutes of GTA 6. The creator previews that dropped alongside it revealed over 50 additional details Rockstar never put on camera.
On August 27, 2026, select outlets and content creators — including IGN, The New York Times, TroisCouleurs, and TGG (The Gaming Gorilla, 2M+ subscribers) — published impressions from private, hands-off sessions at Rockstar North in Edinburgh. Rockstar's own official account confirmed TGG's visit with a reply on X. Rob Nelson, co-studio head and head of development at Rockstar North, spoke directly to multiple creators.
What follows is every major detail from those previews, organized by system, with every claim tagged. CONFIRMED means multiple independent press sources back it. REPORTED means a single credible creator (typically TGG) stated it but no independent outlet has corroborated it yet. RUMOR means the sourcing is unclear or contested. We will update tags as new sources emerge.
Story, Campaign, and Playtime
Rob Nelson told creators that his most recent playthrough of GTA 6 took approximately 80 hours to complete, including the main story and some optional objectives. CONFIRMED — IGN, VICE, multiple outlets independently report Nelson's statement.
The campaign uses a chapter-based structure, similar to Red Dead Redemption 2. Players face decisions throughout — some minor choices have delayed consequences, while major turning points can alter events immediately. Rockstar believes these branching possibilities give players a reason to replay the campaign. CONFIRMED — VICE, IGN.
Before settling on Jason and Lucia, Rockstar explored an earlier version of the game featuring four playable characters. That concept was scrapped because the studio felt it would be difficult to build meaningful connections with that many leads. CONFIRMED — VICE.
Many missions offer multiple completion paths — different escape routes, the choice between driving or shooting while your partner drives, and optional approaches to objectives. Some police pursuits even point players toward the most effective getaway path, though players can ignore it. CONFIRMED — VICE, IGN.
Money is more important to the campaign than in any previous Grand Theft Auto game. Players may need to raise a specific amount of cash before advancing certain parts of the main story. CONFIRMED — VICE, IGN.
Jason and Lucia's Relationship
The relationship between Jason and Lucia is optional to develop romantically. Players can keep their partnership strictly platonic and still complete the entire campaign. Anyone choosing the romance path will need to spend additional time with the pair outside of missions — working out together, visiting stores, changing their appearance, sightseeing, and pulling off crimes. CONFIRMED — VICE, IGN.
While roaming Leonida, players can switch between Jason and Lucia freely. When not being controlled, the other character continues their own daily life — and may send texts about what they are doing or things that need handling at home. Repeatedly ignoring these texts damages the relationship. CONFIRMED — VICE, IGN.
The couple can walk hand in hand, hold doors open for each other, and suggest spontaneous activities while traveling. The strength of their bond may change how certain scenes and events play out. However, regardless of tension between them, Jason and Lucia will never break up — the story requires their partnership. CONFIRMED — VICE, TroisCouleurs (Journal du Geek).
The zoo has been confirmed as one of several couple date activities: Jason and Lucia can visit together to improve their relationship. Wildlife discovered at the zoo or out in the wild can be studied and recorded on a checklist, expanding a system from Red Dead Redemption 2. CONFIRMED — VICE, Gaming Bolt, IGN.
The Map and Open World
Rockstar describes the GTA 6 map as "very big" without providing exact measurements. Based on creator preview estimates, Leonida's complete landmass may be roughly three times larger than Red Dead Redemption 2 and approximately double the size of GTA 5's map. Vice City itself is reportedly around twice the size of GTA 5's Los Santos. One preview estimated Leonida has nearly 11 times more populated space than GTA 5. CONFIRMED — VICE, multiple outlets. Note: these are preview estimates, not official Rockstar measurements.
A rideshare app called Ryde Me (also reported as "RideMe" by some outlets) allows players to request a driver and either ride along or skip the journey to fast-travel. Bus stops also function as fast-travel points — players can wait for a bus, experience the full ride, or skip ahead. CONFIRMED — Kinda Funny, VICE, PCQuest.
Activities confirmed beyond the main story include pool, mini golf, kayaking, diving, parachuting, working out, visiting the zoo, fishing, DJing, basketball, jet skiing, weightlifting, canoeing, dog petting, and more. CONFIRMED — VICE, Extended Look broadcast, IGN.
A Focus mechanic can reveal nearby objects and useful details while also making it easier to stay out of the police's path. CONFIRMED — VICE, Push Square.
Police and Wanted System
This is the single biggest system overhaul revealed in the previews. Here is every confirmed detail.
The maximum wanted rating has been restored to six stars, reversing GTA 5's decision to cap at five. CONFIRMED — Extended Look broadcast, VICE, multiple outlets.
Law enforcement will only be alerted when someone sees the offense or a security system detects it — an NPC can call them, a store alarm can trigger, or a tracked stolen vehicle can automatically alert police. CONFIRMED — IGN, VICE.
Officers responding to a call receive details about what happened and who may be involved. Individual identification symbols beneath the wanted meter tell players exactly which pieces of information the authorities currently possess — face, outfit, weapon, vehicle, and CCTV identification. CONFIRMED — IGN, Push Square, VICE, Insider Gaming.
Hollow (outlined) wanted stars mean police know a crime occurred but do not know who committed it. Players can pass directly by officers without being stopped, as long as they do not draw attention. CONFIRMED — Keen Gamer, VICE, Push Square, GTA 6 Countdown compilation.
Getting away does not end the investigation. The crime scene location can remain an active police zone, with officers searching the surrounding area before eventually calling off. Losing your stars does not necessarily mean you are safe — if police still have identifying information and encounter you again, they can recognize you and restart the chase. CONFIRMED — VICE, IGN, Push Square.
Players can actively remove identification information: visit a barber to clear a facial description, swap into a completely different outfit (a hat or glasses alone is not enough), destroy CCTV footage during robberies to prevent police from learning your appearance, switch or respray vehicles at Pay 'n' Spray (confirmed returning), or have Jason and Lucia split up to force officers to divide their resources. CONFIRMED — VICE, IGN, Push Square, Insider Gaming.
Police no longer appear on the minimap by default. Instead, the Focus mechanic can reveal officers through walls, forcing players to pay more attention to their actual surroundings. CONFIRMED — Push Square.
At six wanted stars, police searches become map-wide rather than limited to a local search radius. In Vice City specifically, the crowded streets and tight roads make escaping in a car significantly harder at three stars or above. CONFIRMED — VICE.
NPCs react realistically to visible weapons. Carrying a large weapon can make people quietly distance themselves. Aiming it can cause panic — or cause armed NPCs to draw concealed weapons of their own. Rob Nelson stated directly that the old dynamic of the player being "all-powerful" is deliberately gone. CONFIRMED — Insider Gaming (Nelson quote), VICE.
Criminal Profile
The Criminal Profile system replaces Red Dead Redemption 2's Honor system, but it is fundamentally different. It is a persistent behavior ledger, not a simple good/evil slider. It does not divide actions into moral categories — instead, it tracks patterns. CONFIRMED — VICE, IGN, Insider Gaming.
Unnecessary violence and excessive destruction contribute to the profile. Surprisingly mundane actions — like correctly disposing of trash — also shape it. Violence required by missions or necessary during robberies does not automatically damage it. Successfully completing robberies efficiently can improve Jason or Lucia's reputation as capable criminals. CONFIRMED — VICE, Extended Look previews.
The Criminal Profile can affect how residents react to Jason and Lucia and how certain parts of the story develop. Our previous reporting indicates the profile badge can break permanently if it degrades far enough — an unrecoverable state across the full ~80-hour playthrough. CONFIRMED — VCH analysis from Extended Look coverage, corroborated by VICE and IGN's descriptions of the system's persistent nature.
Robberies and Money
Robberies are built around a core tension: escape quickly or steal as much as possible. Blowing open a safe is faster, but the explosion damages some valuables inside. Searching for the combination takes longer but preserves the full value. Spending extra time increases the chance police arrive before you escape. CONFIRMED — VICE.
Many robbery locations include secondary exits to avoid police. Officers can surround a store or bank and wait for you to come outside. CONFIRMED — VICE.
Stolen jewelry, vehicles, and other valuables must be sold through specialized fences. Vehicle fences may provide tips about valuable cars stored in locations like police impound lots. CONFIRMED — VICE.
Car Theft and the Waink App
Stealing parked vehicles is no longer a single button press. Vehicles are separated into security tiers, with expensive models being considerably harder to steal. CONFIRMED — IGN, VICE, multiple outlets.
The Waink phone app can scan a vehicle before you attempt to take it. A scan reveals the car's estimated value, personal registration cost, lock status, alarm, and tracking technology. CONFIRMED — IGN, GameSpot, Kotaku, GamesRadar, VICE.
Older vehicles can be opened with simple tools like a slim jim. Modern luxury cars may require advanced devices such as key-cloning tools. Some vehicles cannot be stolen early in the campaign because the necessary equipment is unlocked through story progress. CONFIRMED — IGN, VICE.
Stolen cars lose value when delivered with visible damage. Delivering vehicles in good condition is harder because Vice City has narrower roads and denser traffic. Certain cars contain advanced GPS trackers that automatically report their location to police — players may need to maintain high speed to outrun the signal or abandon the vehicle. CONFIRMED — VICE.
Phone and Social Media
Jason and Lucia's phone is now a physical object in the game world rather than a traditional HUD overlay. The camera moves closer to the character's hand whenever the phone is used. Each character has their own apps and follows different people. CONFIRMED — VICE.
Snapmatic returns as GTA 6's parody of Instagram. Jason and Lucia cannot upload their own photos because they are fugitives trying to avoid a digital trail, but players can browse posts, follow accounts, and observe online conversations. Videos and posts discovered on social media can lead to actual locations and people around the map — some people posting content online can later be found in the real world. CONFIRMED — VICE, Extended Look broadcast, NYT.
Safehouses, Customization, and Body
Jason and Lucia share a safehouse as their home. These locations operate more like the lively camps in Red Dead Redemption 2 — other characters come and go, and some bases may belong to someone else. CONFIRMED — VICE.
The muscle/fat/stamina system returns. Regular workouts make Jason and Lucia stronger and more muscular; eating too much increases weight. Eating restores significant health. Extended periods without sleep, excessive drinking, or long police chases can leave visible signs on their faces and bodies. CONFIRMED — VICE, extended previews.
Cars feature usable trunks where players can stash weapons and a change of clothes — useful when trying to clear a clothing identification from the police. Each clothing store and salon offers its own unique selection, giving players a reason to shop across Leonida. CONFIRMED — VICE.
Performance and Technical
Rob Nelson confirmed the current console build runs at 30 frames per second on PS5, PS5 Pro, and Xbox Series X|S. No performance mode has been confirmed. Sony's "PS5 Pro Enhanced" label currently does not correspond to any confirmed frame rate advantage. CONFIRMED — Davy Jones, Flow Games, TechRadar, GamesRadar.
First-person gameplay reportedly will not be included at launch. Rockstar has not officially confirmed or denied this specific claim. REPORTED — creator previews.
GTA Online Timing
Rockstar officially described GTA 6 as a "single-player experience" at launch. No multiplayer mode has been announced. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick confirmed that the current GTA Online (GTA 5) will "stay in market" after GTA 6 launches, and the company will continue releasing content for it. CONFIRMED — Take-Two press release, Zelnick earnings call.
The exact timing of a new GTA Online mode remains unknown. One leaker with a credible Call of Duty track record suggested a December 2026 window; analysts and insiders have speculated anything from one month to over a year post-launch. RUMOR — no official Rockstar statement exists on timing.
Reported but Unverified
The following details have been attributed to TGG's coverage but could not be independently confirmed through any other press preview or the VICE 150-detail compilation that credits TGG directly. They are listed here for completeness. We will update their status as new sources emerge.
- Drive-thrus are fully functional with temporary stat boosts — UNVERIFIED
- Convenience stores let you physically pick items from shelves (what IS confirmed: Jason opens a fridge and selects food) — UNVERIFIED as described
- Quick waypoint system lets you select points of interest without opening the map, PS5 touchpad opens map — UNVERIFIED
- Streamer Mode filters copyrighted music; Photo Mode similar to RDR2 — UNVERIFIED
- Cinematic Mode from RDR2 returns for driving — UNVERIFIED (what IS confirmed: combat slow-motion kill-cam)
- Phone includes a fitness app that tells you when to work out — UNVERIFIED (workout systems generally confirmed; a dedicated reminder app is not sourced)
These are not debunked. They are simply not independently sourced as of today. If TGG or another creator confirms them in follow-up coverage, we will upgrade them immediately.
What This Means for Your Money
The previews paint a picture of a game where money touches everything. You need cash to advance the story. Robberies have real tradeoff mechanics that affect your take. Cars lose value when damaged. The relationship system costs money to maintain — dates, shopping, and activities are how you build the bond. The Criminal Profile rewards efficient, clean crime and punishes waste. And the police system means every job carries real risk that scales with how sloppy you are.
This is the deepest money simulation Rockstar has ever built. We are breaking down each system into dedicated guides over the coming days.
