NOT CONFIRMED. Rockstar has not announced how big the GTA 6 download is. The number everywhere this week, 200GB, traces back to a leaker's development build, not the game you will download. Retail estimates land lower, and the only date the real size becomes public is preload day, November 12.
Where does the 200GB number come from?
REPORTED. The chain, in order. On October 12, Notebookcheck reported that the leaker CyberLeek had described the GTA 6 build he claims to hold as taking up more than 200GB of hard drive space. On October 18, VetTV traced the claim to its source: a development build, the working version of the game that developers use, and confirmed that neither Rockstar nor Sony had published any install size. On October 19, GameGPU reported that leaked developer benchmark builds exceed 200GB, while noting the caveat itself: production builds traditionally carry extensive debugging tools, uncompressed assets, and utility libraries that never ship.
REPORTED. A development build is not a download size. Dev builds are bloated by design: they hold debugging tools, diagnostic data, duplicate assets, and files that get compressed or cut before release. Notebookcheck made the same point in its original report: development builds usually do not reflect retail releases, because studios optimize textures and compress assets to minimize the final install. The 200GB figure is best read as an upper limit, not a prediction.
How big will the retail download actually be?
REPORTED. The most-cited press estimate comes from GamesRadar, which expects GTA 6 to need at least 120 to 130GB and says it could be significantly more, an estimate tracked in Vice Atlas's graded file-size briefing. Nothing from Rockstar narrows it further: as of October 20, neither the PlayStation Store nor the Xbox Store listing shows an install size at all. Here is the number in context against Rockstar's own history:
| Game | Size | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| GTA IV (2008) | About 10GB | Full install at launch |
| GTA 5 (PS5) | About 95GB | Current version, with years of updates |
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | About 99GB | Console install at launch; PC listed 150GB of free space |
| GTA 6 development build | Over 200GB, reported | A leaker's working build, not the retail game |
| GTA 6 retail download | Not announced | Press estimates start at 120-130GB |
OUR TAKE. Plan for the top of the range, not the bottom. Clear 200GB of free space before November 12 and any confirmed size at or under it is a pleasant surprise. Planning around 130GB and getting hit with 190GB on preload morning is how launch week starts with a storage crisis.
What does the size mean for your console?
REPORTED. Console drives are smaller than the number on the box, because the system software takes its cut first. Here is what a GTA 6 install does to each machine at both ends of the estimate range:
| Console | Usable space | At 130GB | At 200GB |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 (original) | 667GB | About 19% of the drive | About 30% |
| PS5 Slim | 848GB | About 15% | About 24% |
| PS5 Pro | About 1.89TB | About 7% | About 11% |
| Xbox Series X | 802GB | About 16% | About 25% |
| Xbox Series S | 364GB | About 36% | About 55% |
OUR TAKE. Series S owners have the real problem. At 200GB, one game takes over half the usable drive. At 130GB it still takes more than a third. If you play on a Series S, the honest launch budget is the $79.99 game plus, very possibly, a storage expansion card. Everyone else is deleting two or three big games, which costs nothing but an evening of re-downloads later.
How long will the download take?
OUR TAKE. Download time depends entirely on your connection, and preload week is the whole fix. The math at both ends of the estimate range:
| Connection speed | 130GB download | 200GB download |
|---|---|---|
| 200 Mbps | About 1.4 hours | About 2.2 hours |
| 100 Mbps | About 2.9 hours | About 4.4 hours |
| 50 Mbps | About 5.8 hours | About 8.9 hours |
| 25 Mbps | About 11.6 hours | About 17.8 hours |
CONFIRMED. Preload opens at local midnight on November 12, 2026, per Rockstar Support, a full week before launch. That week exists for exactly this reason: start the download on November 12 and even the slowest connection on this table finishes days before unlock. Starting on November 19 is how you spend launch day watching a progress bar. Our breakdown of GTA 6 release times in every region has the full unlock table.
Watch out for fake GTA 6 downloads
REPORTED. The size rumor has already been weaponized. TweakTown reports that fake GTA 6 builds ranging from 113GB to 145GB have been circulating on torrent sites for weeks, and some of them have been linked to malware. The fakes borrow credibility from the real rumor: a file that claims to be roughly the rumored size sounds plausible.
OUR TAKE. File size proves nothing. Any GTA 6 download offered before November 12 is fake by definition, because the real game cannot be downloaded before preload opens, and the only real copies come through the PlayStation and Xbox stores. We covered the same trap in our breakdown of fake GTA 6 demos and malware warnings: if it is not inside the official store, it is not the game.
Frequently Asked Questions
How big is the GTA 6 download?
NOT CONFIRMED. Rockstar has not announced an install size, and neither console store listing shows one. The only hard number in circulation, over 200GB, describes a reported development build. Press estimates for the retail download start at 120 to 130GB.
Is GTA 6 really 200GB?
REPORTED. The 200GB figure comes from the leaker CyberLeek's description of a development build, reported by Notebookcheck on October 12 and traced by VetTV on October 18. Development builds carry debug tools and uncompressed assets, so the retail download is expected to be smaller. Rockstar has confirmed no size.
Is the 676GB GTA 6 screenshot real?
NOT CONFIRMED. No. A screenshot showing a 676.7GB Xbox install has circulated twice and is doctored: among other tells, it offers to install the game on an Xbox One, a console GTA 6 is not coming to. The real Xbox Store listing shows no size at all.
Will GTA 6 fit on an Xbox Series S?
OUR TAKE. Yes, but it will crowd everything else out. The Series S has 364GB of usable space, so a 130GB install takes about 36 percent of the drive and a 200GB install about 55 percent. Expect to delete most other large games or add an expansion card.
When will the real GTA 6 file size be known?
CONFIRMED. Preload opens at local midnight on November 12, 2026, per Rockstar Support, and boxed copies contain a download code rather than a disc. OUR TAKE. The store listing will have to show the real install size when preload opens, so November 12 is the latest anyone waits for the confirmed number.
Does the physical edition of GTA 6 come on a disc?
CONFIRMED. No. The boxed edition contains a download code, not a disc, so every player downloads the full game regardless of how they buy it. Our guide on whether GTA 6 comes with a disc covers what that means for collectors and resale.
