Rumor

89% of GTA 6 Pre-Orders Chose the $100 Edition. Nobody Had To.

5 min readVice City Hustle

Nine out of ten people who have pre-ordered Grand Theft Auto VI paid for the $99.99 version.

Not half. Not two thirds. Eighty-nine percent.

That number is so far outside normal that the analyst who produced it said he has never seen anything like it in his career. And it was collected during a window in which absolutely nobody needed to make that decision yet.

The Number

Digital intelligence firm Sensor Tower, reporting via GamesIndustry.biz, estimates that 89% of GTA 6 pre-orders so far are for the Ultimate Edition rather than the $79.99 Standard.

The platform split:

PlatformUltimate Edition share
Xbox90%
PlayStation88.5%

For context on how strange that is, here is Karl Kontus, Sensor Tower's GM of Video Game Insights, speaking to GamesIndustry.biz: typical premium shares for games sit around 10 to 20%. A 50% premium share during pre-orders would already be a great number.

His summary: he has never seen a 90% premium share before.

So the industry norm is roughly one in five buyers taking the expensive edition. GTA 6 is running at nine in ten. That is not a strong result. That is an inversion of how game pre-orders work.

Read This Part Before You Treat It as Fact

Rockstar has not confirmed this. Take-Two has not confirmed this.

Sensor Tower is a reputable firm and this is real reporting from a credible outlet. It is also an outside estimate of a number that only one company can actually see, and that company has deliberately declined to share it.

Take-Two's CEO has been circling this figure for two weeks without ever stating it. On CNBC he said pre-orders were skewing more to the premium edition, then attached no units and no percentages to it. On the earnings call he called the pre-order numbers unprecedented and astonishing, then immediately refused to convert them into a forecast, saying the company does not believe in claiming victory before it occurs.

Sensor Tower filled in the blank from outside the building. That is legitimate analysis and it is not a confirmation.

Verdict: RUMOR. Credible source, unverified figure. Every headline you see today stating 89% as fact is overstating what anyone actually knows.

Nobody Had To Decide

Here is the part that makes this a money story rather than a stat.

Rockstar confirmed months ago that Standard Edition owners can buy the Ultimate Edition Upgrade separately, at any time. That is on Rockstar's own store listing. We covered it in full in our upgrade-later breakdown.

So consider what the 89% were actually buying:

  • No deadline. The upgrade path stays open indefinitely.
  • No loss. The pre-order bonus, the Vintage Vice City Pack, is identical on both editions.
  • No urgency. Take-Two's CEO has said there are no plans to cut the price, so waiting doesn't cost you a discount either.
  • Almost no information. Rockstar has released roughly four minutes of GTA 6 footage in total. The Extended Look doesn't air until August 27.

Nine out of ten people paid a $20 premium, twelve days before the first substantial look at the game, for content they could have added at any point afterwards.

OUR TAKE: that isn't a purchase decision. It's an enthusiasm decision. Which is fine — but it's worth naming, because it's being reported as evidence of the game's value rather than evidence of the hype's intensity.

In Fairness to the 89%

Two things stop this being a story about people making a mistake.

First, the early crowd is self-selected. Zelnick's own framing is that the most avid consumers pre-order first, and Sensor Tower's analyst agrees — special editions always over-perform during pre-orders because the people buying three months out are the ones who were never going to buy anything else.

Second, the analyst expects the number to collapse. Kontus said he anticipates the premium share falling as casual buyers arrive, likely toward something closer to an even split, though probably still above the industry norm.

Read those two together and the picture changes shape. The 89% isn't nine out of ten GTA players. It's nine out of ten of the earliest, most committed GTA players, measured before the general audience has shown up.

There are also entirely reasonable reasons to take Ultimate now. You want everything unlocked as the story delivers it. You'd rather buy once and never think about it again. The standalone upgrade's price has never been published, so buying the bundle removes that uncertainty. None of those are irrational.

What This Actually Tells You

Three things, honestly:

  1. The demand is real and enormous. Whatever the exact figure, a premium share anywhere near this is unprecedented, and it lines up with everything Take-Two has said.
  2. Rockstar's paywall strategy worked. Locking exclusive vehicles, weapons and stores behind the higher tier converted at a rate the industry has never recorded.
  3. The information gap is doing the selling. People are buying the biggest version of a game they have seen four minutes of. That is the clearest possible measure of how much trust this franchise carries — and the clearest possible argument for waiting until August 27 if you haven't bought yet.

If you have already pre-ordered Ultimate, nothing here suggests you were wrong. If you haven't decided, the only thing that has changed this week is that you now know almost everyone else decided early. That isn't a reason to.

The Honest Bottom Line

  • RUMOR: the 89% figure, and the 90%/88.5% platform split. Sensor Tower estimate, reported by GamesIndustry.biz. Not confirmed by Rockstar or Take-Two.
  • CONFIRMED: Standard Edition owners can add the Ultimate Upgrade separately at any time.
  • CONFIRMED: the Vintage Vice City Pack pre-order bonus is identical on both editions.
  • CONFIRMED: Take-Two has declined to publish any pre-order figures or edition splits.
  • OUR TAKE: the split reflects who is buying right now, not what the game is worth. Expect it to fall.
  • NOT CONFIRMED BY ANYONE: any GTA 6 in-game payout, price or income rate. Rockstar has published none.
