Can You Upgrade to GTA 6 Ultimate Edition Later? What Rockstar Actually Confirmed

Short answer: yes. Rockstar confirmed it on its own site, in its own words, back in June.

The Ultimate Edition Upgrade will be available for Standard Edition owners to purchase separately at any time.

That single sentence should have ended the $20 argument the day pre-orders opened. It didn't, and it's worth understanding why. What Rockstar Has Actually Confirmed

Four things, all official, all published:

1. Standard Edition is $79.99. Ultimate Edition is $99.99. A $20 gap.
2. The Ultimate Edition Upgrade can be bought separately at any time by Standard Edition owners.
3. Ultimate content does not arrive on day one. It unlocks chapter by chapter as you play through Jason and Lucia's story.
4. The pre-order bonus is identical on both editions. The Vintage Vice City Pack comes with Standard and with Ultimate.

Read points 2 and 4 together and the whole pre-order panic collapses. You are not locked out of anything by choosing Standard. You are not losing the pre-order pack. You are not forfeiting content — you are deferring a purchase.

The Detail Nobody Has Published

Here's where every article you've read gets vague, including the ones telling you to buy Standard.

Rockstar has never published the price of the Ultimate Edition Upgrade.

Every source stating it will cost $20 is assuming the upgrade will equal the gap between editions. That is a reasonable assumption. It is also, as of today, an assumption. Outlets covering the story have been explicit that they could not verify it.

So the honest framing is:

• CONFIRMED: the upgrade exists and will be sold separately at any time.
• NOT CONFIRMED: what it costs.

Could it come in above $20? It's possible. Publishers sometimes price standalone upgrade packs at a premium over the bundled difference. Could it come in at exactly $20? Also possible, and probably more likely.

We don't know, and neither does anyone telling you they do. That uncertainty is small, but it's real, and it belongs in the decision rather than being quietly deleted from it.

If you buy Standard today, you get to watch that showcase, see how the customisation and shop systems actually present themselves, and then decide whether five exclusive stores and a handful of vehicles are worth the extra spend.

If you buy Ultimate today, you've made that decision using screenshots and a bullet list.

You're not saving $20. You're buying information for free — and you're keeping the option open in both directions.

Who Should Just Buy Ultimate

This isn't a campaign against the Ultimate Edition. There are real reasons to take it now:

• You're a completionist and you already know you'll want every shop, vehicle and side activity available as the story unlocks them.
• You want zero friction. Buying once and never thinking about it again has genuine value.
• The upgrade-price uncertainty bothers you more than $20 does. Buying Ultimate now removes that variable entirely.

If any of those describe you, take Ultimate and don't look back. It's a fair price for the content. It just isn't a decision anyone needs to make in a hurry.

The Part That Actually Affects Money

There's a separate question hiding underneath the edition debate, and it matters more.

Of the five shops locked behind Ultimate, most are cosmetic. A hair salon, a streetwear store and a tattoo parlour change how Jason and Lucia look. They do not change what you earn.

The vehicle customisation shops are a more interesting case, because in past GTA titles vehicle modification has sat closer to the money economy than clothing ever has. Whether that holds in GTA 6 is unknown — Rockstar has published nothing about how vehicle mods interact with earning in Leonida.

The rule underneath all of it: no shop, vehicle or outfit in either edition makes you money on its own. Rockstar has published zero GTA 6 payouts, prices or income rates. Anyone selling you an edition on the promise of in-game earnings is inventing the earnings.
