Rockstar Killed a Free Browser GTA 5 in Hours

Published October 6, 2026.

REPORTED. A website let anyone play the full GTA 5 story mode free in a web browser on October 6, built from the leaked GTA 5 source code with assets compressed to about 700MB. It even loaded the leaked in-development GTA 6 map. Within hours, the site was taken down and now shows a Cloudflare block, per RockstarINTEL.

What was the GTA 5 browser port?

REPORTED. The site, playgta5.com, ran the full GTA 5 story mode as the PC version inside browsers like Chrome, on desktop and mobile, with no download, install, or streaming required, per RockstarINTEL. It supported keyboard and mouse, controller, and touchscreen input, with resolution settings and save support. GTA Online was not accessible. The port was built using the leaked GTA 5 source code, with the game's assets compressed down to around 700MB. Within hours of spreading on social media, hundreds of thousands of people had viewed footage of it on Twitter.

Why was it taken down so fast?

REPORTED. Letting people play an entire paid game without owning it, free, in a browser is massive copyright infringement, and the site was taken down within hours, per RockstarINTEL. Visiting it now displays a Cloudflare "blocked" message stating the content was restricted due to a violation. There was likely a second reason for the speed: with save support, the port could load the recently leaked in-development version of GTA 6's map, and footage of the map running in the browser circulated online too. OUR TAKE. Take-Two's lawyers move fastest when leaked GTA 6 material is playable rather than just viewable. A browsable map is a spoiler vector they cannot tolerate six weeks from launch.

Has this happened before?

REPORTED. Just last week, Take-Two had an Android port and a Switch version of GTA 5 taken down, per RockstarINTEL. A web-based version of Vice City was also recently pulled by Rockstar's parent company. Readers keep asking for GTA 5 on mobile, but there is still no official version despite it evidently running on Android devices. RockstarINTEL notes the browser project appears to be the work of someone using AI to assist them, part of a wider wave of AI-assisted game decompiling that publishers are now confronting.
