GTA 6 Officially Rated R18+ in Australia

Published October 6, 2026.

CONFIRMED. Australia's Classification Board has formally rated Grand Theft Auto VI R18+, with consumer advice citing high-impact violence, sex scenes and drug use. The ruling, dated August 27, 2026, ends weeks of confusion over interim MA15+ and X18+ listings that were never board decisions.

What did Australia's Classification Board decide?

CONFIRMED. The Australian Classification Board's official entry lists Grand Theft Auto VI as R18+, classified on August 27, 2026, with the applicant named as Take 2 Interactive Software Pty Ltd. The consumer advice reads: "High impact violence, sex scenes and drug use." The board cites strong impacts across six categories: themes, violence, language, drug use, nudity and sex, per Twisted Voxel. The listing even includes a story synopsis: Jason and Lucia are criminals whose plans go wrong, leaving them caught in a criminal conspiracy across Leonida. R18+ restricts the game to adults aged 18 and over. It is the same rating GTA V received from the same board in 2013, per Tech Times.

Why was there confusion about GTA 6's Australian rating?

REPORTED. Two false leads circulated before the board ruling surfaced. First, an Australian Classification database entry showed MA15+, but POPTOPIC found it was generated through the automated IARC questionnaire tool, not a scene-by-scene board decision, and the database has carried multiple GTA VI-labelled entries including obvious fakes rated G and PG. Second, a PlayStation Ultimate Edition ad briefly displayed an "X18+ RESTRICTED" mark, but GTA BOOM notes X18+ cannot exist for games in Australia: it is a film-only category for non-simulated sexual content, and the only step above R18+ for a game is Refused Classification, an outright ban. The ad has reportedly been taken down. Our live confirmed-details tracker followed the storefront wording while noting it was not a board ruling; this ruling closes that caveat.

How does Australia's rating compare to other regions?

CONFIRMED. The regional picture is consistent: the US carries ESRB Mature 17+, Europe and the UK carry PEGI 18, New Zealand carries R18, and Saudi Arabia lists 21+, per Twisted Voxel and Heist Atlas. Australia's wording goes further than the ESRB's broader "Strong Sexual Content" line by naming sex scenes outright, a detail that drew attention because GTA V's 2013 Australian rating said only "sex." Board wording changes over time, so the phrase alone does not show GTA 6 is more explicit.
