How GTA 6 Starts: Your First Money Job Is Already Confirmed
Rockstar's own character bios spell out Jason's opening situation — rent-free housing in exchange for shakedowns. Your first income in Leonida is debt collection, and it's confirmed.
Everyone is arguing about which business to buy first in GTA 6. Rockstar already told us what you'll actually be doing in the opening hours, and it isn't buying anything.
You'll be collecting other people's debts. For free. To cover your rent.
It's confirmed, it's been sitting in Rockstar's own character bios since May 2025, and almost nobody has read it as a money story.
What Rockstar Confirmed
Jason Duval's official bio is short and does a lot of work. Rockstar's exact framing: Jason wants an easy life, but things just keep getting harder. He grew up around grifters and crooks. After a stint in the Army, he found himself in the Keys working for local drug runners.
Brian Heder's bio fills in the rest. He's a veteran Keys smuggler from the golden age of trafficking, still moving product through his boat yard with his third wife Lori, and around long enough to let others do his dirty work.
And then the line that matters:
Heder lets Jason live rent-free at one of his properties, in exchange for collecting payments through local shakedowns and moving product.
That's Rockstar's own copy. Not a leak, not community analysis. The official character bios, published alongside Trailer 2.
PC Gamer identified Brian as the supporting character with the most screen time in Trailer 2, and connected him directly to the opening: the small house Jason is shown fixing up early in the trailer is Brian's. That's the roof-repair shot everyone remembers. He's maintaining a property he doesn't own, for a man he owes.
So the confirmed opening picture:
- You start in the Leonida Keys, not Vice City.
- You start with a house you don't own and can't sell.
- You start in debt, paid off in labour rather than cash.
- Your work is collections and moving product — shaking down Heder's tenants, and running his cargo.
- Your boss is someone who has specifically stopped doing dangerous work himself.
Why Nobody Read This as a Money Story
Because it was published as character lore, and the money community reads character lore for plot, not economics.
Strip the names out and look at what it describes. You arrive with no capital, no property, no vehicle you own outright, and a standing obligation to someone else. Your first income stream is enforcement work paid in kind rather than cash — you collect money and none of it is yours.
That is a very deliberate starting position, and it's the opposite of how most players are planning their first hour.
What It Tells You About Day One
Four things, and the first is the important one.
1. You start negative, not at zero
Most GTA games start you broke. This one starts you owing. Rent-free isn't free — it's deferred, and the deferral is paid in shakedowns.
OUR TAKE: an opening built around working off an obligation strongly suggests the early economy is about escaping a fixed cost rather than accumulating a surplus. Your first real financial goal probably isn't "make money." It's "stop owing Brian Heder."
2. Your first income requires no purchase
Collections work needs no investment. No business to buy, no equipment, no vehicle. You show up and you collect.
That matters because it means the buy-order question doesn't exist yet. Every guide currently ranking businesses to buy first is describing a decision you won't be able to make in the opening hours.
3. The Keys is a small, closed economy
Rockstar describes the Leonida Keys as a tropical archipelago where the dress code is casual and life isn't flashy but it's easy. That's not where fortunes are made — it's a handful of islands, a boat yard, some bars and a lot of water.
Read that alongside what we know about structure. GTA 6 has a chapter-based story, confirmed by Rockstar — a series first. If the opening chapter is set in the Keys with a debt-collection income loop, your day-one earning ceiling is deliberately low and deliberately local.
OUR TAKE: the money doesn't open up until the story moves you off the islands. Rockstar has confirmed none of that, but the structure points hard at it.
4. Everyone you meet early is a contact, not a competitor
Rockstar's cast copy connects these people to each other before the story starts.
Cal Hampton is described in his own bio as a fellow associate of Brian's, and he monitors Coast Guard radio frequencies. That's not colour — that's smuggling logistics. Someone watching for patrols is someone making runs possible.
Raul Bautista is framed as a seasoned bank robber always hunting for talent ready to take the biggest risks for the biggest rewards. In GTA terms, that's a job board with legs.
Brian Heder himself has a plane. One of his published lines: he hauled so much grass in that plane he could make the state of Leonida levitate. A boat yard, a plane, and a network of people who owe him.
That's a network, and it's already assembled. In every previous GTA, contacts unlock the next tier of work.
The Pattern Across the Whole Cast
Look at all seven named supporting characters and something clarifies.
Brian Heder and Raul Bautista sit in the criminal economy. Boobie Ike, Dre'Quan Priest and Real Dimez sit in the media and music economy. Cal Hampton bridges both.
OUR TAKE: every confirmed character is attached to a way money moves. Rockstar hasn't populated Leonida with personalities — it's populated it with industries. That's a strong signal about what the game is actually about, and it means your read on any character is really a read on an income stream.
Where Lucia Fits
Trailer 2 confirms Jason picks Lucia up from the Leonida Penitentiary. Rockstar has framed the pair explicitly as a Bonnie-and-Clyde-style criminal duo — a structural shift from GTA V's three-hander toward something tighter and relationship-driven.
OUR TAKE: if the opening is Jason working off a debt in the Keys, Lucia's arrival is the event that changes the economics. Two people can do jobs one person can't, and the story starts moving the moment she's out. We broke down how to play both for maximum money separately.
The Honest Version of a Day-One Plan
| What people are planning | What's actually confirmed |
|---|---|
| Land in Vice City | You start in the Leonida Keys |
| Grind free-roam for a deposit | Your first work is unpaid debt labour |
| Buy the best business immediately | Nothing suggests businesses are available yet |
| Ignore the story, chase money | Story progression likely gates the economy |
| Open sandbox from minute one | Chapter structure, a series first |
So the practical approach:
- Do the collections work. It isn't a detour from earning — early on it appears to be the earning.
- Learn the Keys properly. Small map, closed economy, and the place you'll operate longest before anything opens up. Our region-by-region breakdown covers what each area looks built for.
- Treat contacts as assets. Heder, Hampton, Bautista. Named, connected, and each attached to a different way money moves.
- Don't plan a rigid buy order. Plan a priority list, so you're not stuck when the first item isn't purchasable.
A Note on the Leaks
This week's leaked footage has produced a lot of noise, and it's worth saying what this guide is and isn't.
Everything above comes from Rockstar's published material — the official character bios, the trailers, the region descriptions. None of it is leaked, none of it needs verifying, and none of it will be walked back.
That distinction matters more than usual right now. Leaked mechanics come from a build that's roughly a year old and will change before November. Published character bios won't. If you want to plan around something stable, plan around this.
The Honest Bottom Line
- CONFIRMED: Jason lives rent-free at a property owned by Brian Heder in exchange for collecting payments through local shakedowns and moving product. Rockstar's official character bios.
- CONFIRMED: Jason's background — grew up around grifters and crooks, a stint in the Army, returned to the Keys working for local drug runners.
- CONFIRMED: Heder runs a boat yard with his wife Lori and has a plane. Cal Hampton is described as an associate of Brian's and monitors Coast Guard frequencies.
- CONFIRMED: the house Jason is shown repairing in Trailer 2 is Brian's property.
- CONFIRMED: Jason collects Lucia from the Leonida Penitentiary. Rockstar frames them as a Bonnie-and-Clyde-style duo.
- OUR TAKE: the opening economy is a small, closed, low-ceiling loop built around clearing an obligation, and the real money opens when the story moves you out of the Keys.
- OUR TAKE: every named character is attached to an industry, not just a personality.
- NOT CONFIRMED BY ANYONE: any GTA 6 payout, business price, or income rate. Rockstar has published none. Anyone showing you GTA 6 money figures invented them.
Everyone else is ranking businesses for a game where you may not be able to buy one for hours. The confirmed opening is a man fixing a roof he doesn't own, working off rent by leaning on his neighbours.
That's the actual first money job in GTA 6, and Rockstar told us about it fifteen months ago.
