Sony showed GTA 6 yesterday and none of it was new.
On August 17, PlayStation released a one-minute commercial as part of its "It Happens on PS5" campaign. GTA 6 appears in it three times. Every single frame comes from Trailer 2, which came out in May 2025. CONFIRMED.
What Actually Aired
Three appearances, at roughly the 24-second, 44-second and 52-second marks of a one-minute ad. CONFIRMED.
It sits between clips of Marvel's Wolverine and God of War Laufey. This is a multi-game PlayStation campaign ad, not a GTA 6 trailer. CONFIRMED.
The two identifiable clips:
- Lucia driving a getaway car while Jason jumps in. From Trailer 2. CONFIRMED.
- Jason on a motorcycle with a low-flying seaplane behind him. From Trailer 2. CONFIRMED.
That's it. Fifteen-month-old footage, re-cut into somebody else's advert.
What Sony Changed
Three things, all cosmetic, all confirmed:
- Brighter lighting than the original trailer.
- Full 16:9 framing — the black letterbox bars from Trailer 2 are gone.
- Added sound effects, including a car trunk closing, which wasn't in Trailer 2.
CONFIRMED. That's the complete list of differences.
The Downgrade Claim Is Wrong
The argument going around is that GTA 6 looks worse here than it did in Trailer 2. CAP.
It's the same footage. Frame for frame, shot for shot, identical source material. What changed is the colour grade and the aspect ratio.
A brighter grade is not a downgrade. Removing letterbox bars is not a downgrade. Adding a foley sound of a trunk closing is not a downgrade. You cannot degrade a game by re-colouring a clip of it.
Two other claims worth killing:
- "Sony dropped a new GTA 6 trailer." CAP. It's a PS5 campaign ad featuring several games.
- "New GTA 6 footage." CAP. Every frame is from May 2025.
For context, Rockstar confirmed at the time that Trailer 2 was captured entirely in-game on a standard PS5, and was equal parts gameplay and cutscenes. CONFIRMED.
The Live-Action Parts Aren't Gameplay
The ad also contains live-action material — actors on jet skis near a Vice City-inspired beach, Miami-flavoured shots, and a billboard staged in Poland.
None of that is game footage. CONFIRMED.
Worth saying plainly, because live-action and game footage cut together in a fast-moving advert is exactly the kind of thing that gets screenshotted and reposted as gameplay.
The Story Everyone Is Missing
Everyone is arguing about graphics. The actual story is distribution control.
PlayStation has the marketing budget and the prime-time slot. It is Rockstar's biggest platform partner, and GTA 6 is the single most important title on its 2026 calendar.
And the newest GTA 6 footage Sony could put in that advert is fifteen months old.
OUR TAKE: Rockstar isn't handing fresh footage to anyone. Not to its console partner, not for a national ad campaign, not for the biggest launch in the medium's history. Everything is being held for one date.
That's why August 27 matters. It isn't just the next thing on the calendar — it's the only thing on it.
The Same Blackout Applies to the Money
The footage embargo has an economic twin, and it's the part that matters on this site.
No payout, no business price, no income rate has ever been shown by anyone. Not by Rockstar, not by Sony, not in any advert, trailer, screenshot or press release. OUR TAKE: anyone showing you GTA 6 money numbers today invented them, because there is no source to have taken them from.
That's the whole reason we tag everything. When the well is this dry, confident numbers aren't information — they're a warning sign about whoever is publishing them.
The Verdict
- CONFIRMED: PlayStation released a one-minute "It Happens on PS5" ad on August 17. GTA 6 appears three times, at roughly 24, 44 and 52 seconds, between Marvel's Wolverine and God of War Laufey. Every frame is from Trailer 2 (May 2025). Sony brightened the lighting, removed the letterbox bars, and added sound effects including a trunk closing. The live-action jet ski, Miami and billboard material is not game footage.
- CAP: that Sony dropped a new GTA 6 trailer. That there is new GTA 6 footage. That GTA 6 has been downgraded.
