Update: October 1, 2026. Rockstar's narrative chief has confirmed the GTA 6 team spent years doing field research across Florida, and the itinerary included strip clubs, nightclubs, night drives with ex-cops, beaches, the Everglades, and the Keys. It sounds like a joke. It is also the clearest signal yet that Leonida's nightlife is going to matter for your wallet.
What Rockstar actually said
In Game Informer's September 2026 cover story on GTA 6 (issue 382), senior vice president of narrative Rupert Humphries described how the team studied Florida firsthand:
"We go and try to experience everything, from riding around areas at night with ex-cops, to going to strip clubs and nightclubs, spending time on the beach, in the Everglades, down in the Keys, and beyond."
This was not a one-off trip. Humphries framed it as repeated research travel over the course of development, with one goal: authenticity. "We don't have time to take you everywhere, but we want you to be able to explore and get a feel for most of the places, cultures, and vibes," he told Game Informer. "This game and its stories really thrive in an environment where you have rich people and poor people right next door to each other. And crime and corruption is the thread that pulls everyone together."
That is the whole pitch for Leonida in one paragraph. Read our full breakdown here: GTA 6 Game Informer Cover Story: Every Confirmed Detail
The commute behind the comedy
GTA 6 is led by Rockstar North in Edinburgh, Scotland. The team behind the most Florida game ever made works in a country famous for rain, so the research trips were developers trading Scottish weather for Florida heat to make the game feel like the place instead of a postcard version of it.
Research trips are standard practice across the industry. What is unusual is the setting doubling as a vacation destination, which is why the strip club line traveled so fast. But the unglamorous version is also true: the same trips covered dialects, local quirks, small towns, and swamp culture.
Why strip clubs matter for your wallet
Game Informer's character coverage identifies Boobie Ike, a Vice City power player, as a strip club owner. In a story about two fugitives, Jason and Lucia, who supposedly cannot buy property without drawing heat, the club owners and business operators around them are the people who actually hold wealth. The nightlife is not set dressing. It is where the money sits.
GTA Online already proved the business model. A fully staffed nightclub generates passive income while you run other jobs. It earns in the background, which is why our passive income guide ranks it among the most important systems to understand.
A studio does not spend years researching strip clubs and nightclubs for scenery. It does it because those spaces carry systems: crowds, staff, cash flow, VIP layers, the whole machine. If Leonida is roughly twice the size of GTA V's map, as art director Aaron Garbut has said, the ceiling on those systems goes up with it.
What is confirmed and what is not
Confirmed: Rockstar developers visited Florida strip clubs and nightclubs during years of research trips, per Humphries in Game Informer. Confirmed: Boobie Ike is a strip club owner in GTA 6's story. Confirmed: GTA Online nightclubs produce passive income.
Not confirmed: club ownership mechanics in GTA 6, any specific business system, or how interiors will function. Anyone telling you the research trips confirm buyable clubs is guessing. Educated guessing, but guessing.

FAQ
Did Rockstar really send developers to strip clubs?
Yes. Senior vice president of narrative Rupert Humphries told Game Informer the team's Florida research trips included "going to strip clubs and nightclubs," alongside night drives with ex-cops, beaches, the Everglades, and the Keys.
Does this confirm you can own a strip club in GTA 6?
No. The trips confirm Rockstar researched real nightlife for authenticity. No business ownership mechanics have been confirmed for GTA 6.
Why should money-focused players care?
Because Rockstar studies what it plans to simulate, and GTA Online already proved nightclubs are passive income machines. The players who understand the business layer on day one will out-earn everyone who treats Leonida like a theme park.
