Does GTA 6 Require ID Verification? What's Actually Confirmed
Screenshots of a "Verify Age" screen are going around again, and the claim attached to them keeps getting bigger: that GTA 6 will require you to upload a government ID before you can play online.
Here is what is actually confirmed, what is a leak, and one thing about those screenshots that almost nobody sharing them has mentioned.
CONFIRMED: Nothing
Rockstar Games has made no official statement about GTA 6 requiring age or identity verification.
Not on the Grand Theft Auto VI website. Not on any pre-order page or platform store listing. Not on Take-Two's August 7 earnings call. Not in any Newswire post.
There is no confirmed GTA 6 verification requirement of any kind. Every claim currently circulating traces back to a leak, an inference, or a law that exists independently of Rockstar.
RUMOR: What Tez2 Actually Found
The screenshots are real. What they show is not GTA 6.
Dataminer Tez2 found an age assurance system inside GTA Online — the online mode of GTA 5 — and posted preview images of it. His own words when he shared them: "A preview of age assurance in-game. This is not active yet."
The images show a GTA Online login screen asking players to verify their age to access online features, and a settings menu with an "Additional Settings" section containing separate controls for age verification, online access, store access, and Snapmatic uploads. A third screenshot showed a page where a verification QR code would appear, displaying an error because Rockstar had not switched the service on.
Three things about this that matter:
- It is a GTA Online system. It was datamined from GTA 5's files. It is not a GTA 6 feature, a GTA 6 announcement, or a GTA 6 screenshot.
- The leaker said it was inactive. Not "coming soon" — not active.
- These screenshots are from August 2025. They are roughly a year old.
That last point is the one to hold onto. If you are seeing these images described as breaking GTA 6 news, you are looking at a year-old GTA Online datamine with a new caption on it. That is one of the most common ways a false GTA 6 claim gets built, and we wrote a full guide on spotting it.
CONTEXT: This Is Law, Not a Rockstar Decision
The reason any of this exists has almost nothing to do with Rockstar's preferences.
The UK's Online Safety Act requires platforms hosting adult content to run age checks on users, with fines or blocking for non-compliance. Several European countries have moved in the same direction.
Australia went furthest. Age verification is now required there to access online games with an R18+ classification, and publishers who fail to comply face penalties of nearly AU$50 million. Notably, that requirement covers online games specifically — offline single-player titles with the same rating are not affected.
Rockstar has already shown it will change GTA Online region by region to satisfy local regulators. It removed casino gambling features from GTA Online in Australia with no announcement at all.
Former Rockstar developer Obbe Vermeij, replying to discussion of the UK law in August 2025, said publishers "may not have a choice with the new laws" in some countries and states. He also said he did not expect it to meaningfully hurt GTA 6's sales.
Read that as what it is: a compliance problem arriving from legislatures, landing on every publisher of mature-rated online games at once. Rockstar is not designing this. It is responding to it.
The US Point, Said Plainly
There is no equivalent US federal law requiring age or identity verification to play an online video game.
If you are in the United States, nothing currently on the books obliges Rockstar to check your ID before you play GTA 6. Some individual states have moved on age verification for adult websites, but that is a different category of service and a different legal question.
Anyone telling an American audience that they will need to upload a passport to play GTA 6 is describing a law that does not exist.
OUR TAKE
Single-player is very unlikely to be affected.
Every version of this — the UK act, the Australian codes, the datamined GTA Online system — targets online features. Online lobbies, chat, user-generated content, and stores. Australia's rules explicitly exclude offline single-player games. GTA 6 launches as a single-player experience with no announced online mode.
So the realistic shape of this, if it happens at all: verification lands on online features, in the countries whose laws require it, at whatever point a GTA 6 online mode exists. Not on the disc-free download you paid $79.99 for. Not in the US on day one.
That is a projection, clearly labelled. Rockstar has confirmed none of it.
THE MONEY ANGLE: Why This Belongs on This Site
Here is the part that will cost people real money, and it is the reason we covered this at all.
The moment any verification requirement becomes real — or even convincingly rumoured — sellers appear offering "pre-verified accounts." Skip the checks. Instant online access. Region-locked features unlocked.
Understand exactly what that is:
- It is account selling. Buying a Rockstar account someone else created and verified violates Rockstar's terms of service.
- The risk is the whole account, not the money you paid. A banned account takes everything with it — the game licence you bought, any progress, any purchases.
- You are handing a stranger your payment details and trusting an account that is tied to someone else's identity documents.
- It is already a scam pattern. The same sellers currently offering GTA 6 "early access" and boosting services for a game nobody can play will pivot to this the second it becomes a talking point.
There is no verification requirement to bypass right now, which means every "pre-verified GTA 6 account" being sold today is selling a solution to a problem that does not exist. We broke down how this whole category works, and which version of it ends your account, in our boosting guide.
The Verdict
- CONFIRMED: Rockstar has said nothing. No official statement, no store listing, no earnings call mention.
- RUMOR: Tez2's screenshots of an age assurance system inside GTA Online, posted in August 2025, which the leaker himself described as not active.
- CAP: that GTA 6 currently requires ID verification, that single-player is affected, that any US law mandates it, or that "pre-verified accounts" are a legitimate purchase.
We will update this the moment Rockstar says anything official. Until then, treat any post presenting those screenshots as a GTA 6 announcement as what it is — a year-old GTA Online datamine wearing a new headline.
