GTA 6 vs GTA Online: What's Different and What Carries Over
GTA 6 is single-player, GTA Online is live-service, and almost nothing carries over. Here's every confirmed difference and what it means for making money.
If you are wondering whether GTA 6 is basically GTA Online 2, or whether your years of GTA Online grinding follow you into the new game, this is the honest answer. GTA 6 and GTA Online are two very different beasts, and the differences change everything about how you make money. Here is every confirmed difference, the real answer on what carries over, and what it all means for your wallet on November 19.
The honest headline
Two facts up top, because everything else flows from them.
CONFIRMED: GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 as a single-player experience. GTA Online is a 13-year-old live-service multiplayer game that is still running.
OUR TAKE, based on every Rockstar precedent: almost nothing carries over from GTA Online into GTA 6. No money, no cars, no properties, no rank has been confirmed to transfer, and Rockstar has never carried progress between games before.
Now the detail.
GTA 6 vs GTA Online at a glance
| GTA 6 (Nov 19, 2026) | GTA Online (now) | |
|---|---|---|
| Format | Single-player story experience | Live-service multiplayer |
| You control | Two protagonists, Jason and Lucia | One created character |
| Economy | Brand-new, everyone starts at zero | 13 years of accumulated wealth |
| Platforms | PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only, no PC, no disc | PS5, Xbox, PC |
| Progress carryover | Nothing confirmed to transfer | Not applicable |
| New systems | In-game phone, social media, NPC livestreaming | Legacy systems |

Everything in the GTA 6 column is confirmed by Rockstar except the carryover row, which is our projection from precedent.
What is confirmed about GTA 6 (the differences that matter for money)
It is single-player first. Rockstar has confirmed GTA 6 launches as a single-player experience. GTA Online's timing for GTA 6 is unknown and may arrive months later. For your money, that means day-one earning is story-driven and solo. You will not need a lobby, a crew, or an online grind to start stacking cash.
You play two protagonists. Jason and Lucia are a confirmed dual-protagonist duo, with protagonist switching inside missions and duo missions where they work together. In GTA Online you run one character. In GTA 6, the money angle is that you effectively have a built-in two-person crew you control yourself, which we expect to shape how heists and big scores play out.
It is a chapter-based story. GTA 6 uses a chapter structure similar to Red Dead Redemption 2, rather than GTA Online's endless open grind. That suggests the biggest single payouts will be story set-pieces, the equivalent of GTA 5's The Big Score, with repeatable money coming from smaller activities and businesses.
There are new money-adjacent systems. Rockstar has confirmed an in-game smartphone with social media and an NPC livestreaming and recording system. In GTA Online, none of this existed at this depth. Our take: these systems hint at new in-world ways money, reputation, and clout could move, and they are worth watching closely as the creator-economy angle of GTA 6.
It is current-gen only, and digital. GTA 6 releases on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S with no PC at launch, and it ships as code-in-a-box with no physical disc. GTA Online runs on PC and older setups. For you, that means picking your platform now and planning for a large digital download, not a disc install.
What carries over from GTA Online (the honest answer)
Short version: assume nothing does.
No GTA Online money, cars, properties, businesses, or rank has been confirmed to transfer into GTA 6. This is not a leak or a rumor. It is the consistent pattern across every Rockstar game. GTA IV did not carry into GTA V. Red Dead did not carry into Red Dead Redemption 2. Each online mode started from a clean slate, and there is a strong design reason for it: injecting a decade of glitched and exploited GTA Online wealth into a fresh economy would break it on day one.
What about a returning-player or veteran bonus? That talk is rumor, not confirmed. If Rockstar does anything for loyal players, precedent says it will be small and cosmetic, a symbolic gesture rather than a bank transfer. Anyone telling you your $200 million GTA Online balance is guaranteed to appear in GTA 6 is guessing.
The one thing that truly carries over is you. Your knowledge, your instincts, and your understanding of how Rockstar economies work all transfer, even though your digital assets do not.
Is there a GTA 6 Online?
Not at launch. GTA 6 is confirmed single-player for release, and a separate online mode has no announced date. When it does arrive, expect it to start everyone from zero for the same economic reasons above. For now, plan your GTA 6 money around the single-player game, because that is what exists on November 19.
What this all means for making money (OUR TAKE)
- The day-one race is wide open. A fresh economy means no one loads in with a head start. The player who prepares wins, not the player with the biggest GTA 5 balance.
- Day-one money is solo. Single-player launch means you can earn without waiting on an online mode, a crew, or a lobby.
- Your built-in crew is an edge. If Jason and Lucia function as a controllable two-person team, you may run scores that in GTA Online would need reliable teammates, and keep the whole take.
- Use your GTA Online setup now. Since nothing is confirmed to transfer, your old account is worth the most today. Enjoy it, do not hoard it for a migration that has not been announced.
- Have a plan before launch. The players who turn the fresh economy into an advantage will be the ones who walk in with a first-day money plan instead of guessing.
The honest bottom line
