Fishing in GTA 6 is real, detailed, and confirmed. It just will not make you a dollar.

Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson told YouTuber TGG that fishing is about as detailed as Red Dead Redemption 2's, with one major difference: you cannot keep a single fish. The reason, in Nelson's words: keeping them "didn't fit this game," as reported by GameSpot and Notebookcheck. CONFIRMED.

Everything below comes from Rob Nelson's conversation with TGG during the Rockstar North preview, cross-reported by multiple outlets.

In Red Dead Redemption 2, fishing fed an economy: you could cook, eat, and sell your catch. GameSpot points out why that made sense in 1899 and does not in modern Leonida. Jason and Lucia can buy food on almost any corner, and eating in GTA 6 feeds the weight and gym system instead. CONFIRMED.

Rockstar has shown fishing in two official places so far.

1. The Leonida Keys. An official screenshot shows Jason fishing with Cal Hampton on a boat in the Keys, per GTA6Bible. The Extended Look also showed Jason, Lucia, and Cal fishing and drinking beer on a boat during a story sequence. CONFIRMED.
2. Mount Kalaga. Rockstar's own description of the national park lists "prime hunting, fishing, and off-road trails," as quoted by GTA6Bible. CONFIRMED.

Both are regions on the confirmed GTA 6 map. Neither is Vice City, which fits the idea of fishing as a break from the crime loop rather than part of it.

Buried in the August leak footage was an on-screen prompt: "This is a fishing spot for large Common Snook. Equip a fishing rod to try and catch one." LEAKED.

We originally read that as the outline of an income system: a named species, a required tool, a marked location, and a chance-based catch. Rockstar's confirmation changes the reading, not the details. Named species and marked spots still point to a catalogue. The catalogue just feeds challenges and collectibles, not a sell screen. The species choice still tells you how seriously Rockstar researched Florida. The common snook is one of the state's most prized inshore game fish. Anglers call it robalo or linesider, per Florida Fish and Wildlife, and the Florida state record is 45 pounds 12 ounces, caught near Sebastian, per FWC. CONFIRMED, real-world fact.

There is even a real-world irony here. Florida snook fishing already involves a lot of mandatory releasing. One angler's potential record fish had to be put back because the season was closed. Catch and release is about as Florida as it gets. OUR TAKE.

We are saying this directly because we said the opposite before.

The theory was simple: a zero-risk income loop with no witnesses, no wanted level, and no chance of losing gear. On a map where getting seen costs you, that looked valuable. The theory failed on one fact. There is nothing to sell. A zero-risk method that pays zero is not a money method.

That makes fishing an opportunity cost. Every minute spent fishing is a minute not spent on something that pays. In a campaign where Rockstar has said story missions alone will not fund your progress, that minute matters. OUR TAKE.

Fans noticed the contrast immediately. One reply that spread on X put it bluntly: fishing is catch and release, but robbing a store lets you keep everything, as Sportskeeda covered. Rockstar clearly treats fishing as a break from the hustle, not part of it.
